Which, when you gather that it's a more lighter satire of stereotypes compared to the stereotypes from shows such as Family Guy and South Park, whose fans are in the same ball game of age, around-ish,as Hetalia...it isn't. Really.
Yes I'm going to be standing up for a show. Expect more baawing in the comments than usual.
So, when I first approached this show I was confused as hell by the negativity towards it - not that is had negativity, but what said negativity held: it was mostly people complaining 'WHY ISN'T GERMANY BLOWING UP JEWS? WHY ISN'T JAPAN KILLING WHALES? WHY NO HOLOCAUST?'
I sat here wondering why the fuck they want that here when they could go to...well, many other cartoons and form of media and find the same thing, but eventually got over it. Then when the English dub came out, Funimation got the balls to...well, go past beyond the stereotypes that Japanese people see (which, guys...are not fake stereotypes. It's fucking stupid that people said they're fake only because they're being seen from a guy from the East) and show what us Western folk thought more as...well, our version of stereotypes.
Including actual Jew mentioning.
And of course the immediate reaction, probably from the same people who were complaining before was 'NONONONONONONO BAD OFFENSE NONONONONFDIASFHKJSDHFSADKFASDF FDASJKFADSFDSFDS'.
I'm sorry, and I know people are going to find stereotypes offensive but...Christ's sake, lighten up a bit. They truly do try to skim over the wars in hopes that they won't go South Park mode of racism, and the stereotypes, even in the English, are still relatively...small. Normal. Oh God, your country is being depicted as lazy and likes to eat, a normal stereotype that we've known for years. The humanity of it all. These people should die for their crimes.
I don't know about anyone else, but I was disappointed, even though my country is what grabbed me into it. I saw Canada through fanfiction and fanart for months before actually watching the show/reading the webcomic, and was excited to see what Hima actually did with him. All I got was a polar bear, okay...polite, yeah that's definitely Canadian...mistaken for America, yes Canadians are usually mistaken for Americans...and invisible. What. That's it? I had been hoping for some French up in there, maybe some lumberjack, that crappy Prime Minister we had during the time where the 'Nam war was really cooking, Stephen Harper, our freaky Quebec polar man, Timmies, pancakes, C'MON, I'LL EVEN GO FOR AN IGLOO AS A HOUSE.
Instead though, they portrayed my country as a spineless little twerp who, despite the fact that he's the second largest country in the world and should be like...fucking Russia-size, cannot even stand up to a much smaller country like Cuba, and is ignored even by every country who has...fantastic ties with him.
But I don't care if they made my country a wimp. I fucking love the character and the stereotypes. Hell, some of them they actually got right (French and English people do look down on each other here, and we have a shitload of Asian folks).
Okay, to try to wrap this up: People have different views, even if you find it offensive many other's a not, admit it, you probably laughed at some ethnic joke before in your lifetime or made one yourself, and just: different views. If you find it offensive don't go all shitting over the fans just because they like it. We enjoy stereotypes. It's fine if you don't, just allow us to enjoy these really rather harmless ones. :I
((Mh, yeah. I want to share my opinion. I'm from Germany and I hate it when people say that Germans are racist. But I don't care about the character of Ludwig. I even like him (except for his past). I'm not really offended by him. I see Hetalia more like a... little parody. Sure, it means a lot more to me. Sometimes I take Hetalia really serious. I'm interested in history and it really helped me. But some people really take the stereotypes serious, like the French are perverts and so on. I like almost every country. Because it's interesting culture, nature, language, and so on. For example: I like North Korea. It's a normal country with a cute sounding language. The only thing I don't like is... well, it's boss. You can't say "uh, the country is shitty" just because the head of the respective land is bad. Also: Other countries, different customs. I'm sorry for grammar mistakes. ))
so you are promoting something offensive to your own conutry? where do you thing you are living? japanstan?
I love how japan is a fucking mary sue in hetalia, I guess that was the country of the author... instead japan is made up of pedophiles perverts who killed millions of Chinese civvies during WW2. who also promote an unhumanistic work slavery...
I don't get how it's offensive as the stereotypes towards Canada are relatively tame; except for the extreme pushover thing, but even then it's just a stereotype. Its not that great of a deal.
I'm confused. You seem against Hetalia, so one would think that you wouldn't like offensive stereotypes...and yet you just called all of the Japanese perverted pedophiles who murder people. I have to admit, you have me particularly baffled.
being called coward and a pervert, a slut of the fucking nazist and a good for nothing idiot, when japan who did much worse things than even germany in WW2 is the good and perfect guy is well, boring. but since all of you like it maybe it is the right way...
or I just did that for teach you the reality of the world opposed what your fandom wants to remeber...
I can guess your first language isn't English so that first paragraph really didn't mean a thing to me. I had no idea who you were talking about at the beginning there. I would...guess Japan but the way you worded it would seem otherwise.
And again, your words are just coming off as confusing. And now you're just generalizing even more people. I would tell you that not every Hetalia fan thinks that history went the way Hetalia shows it, but I've dealt with enough people who talk like you about it to know that it'll go in one ear and straight out the other.
Got to admit, had about three different conversations concerning old stamps and fandoms I don't do too much with anymore and this has gone the least anywhere.
I would honestly just ignore the person. Sorry, I've been stalking this. I hope you don't mind. It seems like they just hate Hetalia in general and, from their attitude, probably ran into some really terrible weaboos. This kind of ended up rebounding into the generalization that anyone and everyone who likes Hetalia is like whoever they met. I may be wrong, but that seems like the most likely explanation.
It's quite fine. That may be true. They seem to be avoiding Hetalia now and going into a completely different subject matter all together, though. I'll see if they respond.
You made really good points here with the stamp and description. I don't find Hetalia offensive. As you said, there are shows and series that are even more offensive, and people don't complain about them. The countries aren't portrayed accurately in Hetalia, but that's all right. You can't use a person to portray a country to begin with.
I feel sorry for Canada: forgotten and ignored. However, I believe he can fight when he has to. In the real world, people should stop seeing Canadians are Americans.
Hetalia has taught me more world history than my classes did. It even helped me get updated on geography. Best of all, it helped me appreciate other countries more.
